Want to impress everyone at your next campout, or even reclaim your title as coolest parent alive? Try making these! Not only are they done fast, and taste great, but there is minimal clean-up!
If you haven’t guessed by now, I LOVE simple things and these are simple!!!
They’re as simple as 1-2-3!
1- Throw your omelet in a bag!
You no longer have to listen to all the whining about what the kids (or adults) want or don’t want in their omelet! As soon as they start barking orders you just hand them a bag and tell them to do it! Now you’re no longer responsible for how it turns out ;)
Mix everything together and make sure everyone labels their bag, you don’t want to end up with any mushrooms – Yuck!
2- Get some water boiling!
Now’s a great time to really impress the fellow campers and pull out that Rocket Stove you made! Why everyone is still trying to get their fire going, you’ll already have breakfast made.
3- Boil for 10 Minutes!!!
Now just throw your bags into the boiling water, put the lid on, and boil for 10-12 minutes!
Seriously, that’s it!
I guess there is one more step –
EAT IT!!!
If you want, you can add some salsa, cheese, and I guess even mushrooms if you like those disgusting things!
The best part is there’s NO clean-up (unless you couldn’t figure out what bowl to use for your photoshoot)!

OMELET IN A BAG
INGREDIENTS:
- Eggs – About 2-3 eggs per person
- Mix-Ins – Cheese, Bell Pepper, Onion, Bacon, Tomatoes, Ham, etc…
- Bags – Get bags you can boil food in
- Toppings – Salsa, Cheese, etc…
Put 2-3 eggs and whatever you want in your omelet in the bag. Mix it all together and put the bags into a pot of boiling water. Boil it for 10-12 minutes and then remove the bags from the water. Dump your omelet in a bowl, or just eat it straight out of the bag! Add any desired toppings!
Enjoy, and don’t worry about sharing!
I love boiling food in bags, it makes things easy, but I see from your photos you are using Ziploc brand bags. Ziploc brand bags are not made to withstand the intense temperatures of boiling. It’s one of their most frequently asked questions and they state clearly that they are not safe for boiling in. You need to use something specifically designed for boiling, like Boil-a-bag, or the plastics will leach into your food as it cooks.
Good to know, I just had those laying around, but I did notice the bag flavor did leach into the food a little. I’ll change the directions so people know to use those instead! Thanks.
For those concerned about the safety of any plastics, try mason jars. At some point in history it was fashionable to “coddle” eggs. Just make sure to use a rack.
I didn’t even think of using jars! I’ve become a jar junkie lately, what a great idea!
You want to impress them eh? Do you want to boggle their mind. Take your raw egg whole, and place it in the middle of an old leg of a pair of nylons. Swing it too and fro to tighten up the hose, then pull each end apart and this will cause the egg to spin around and around. Do this a few times. Then when you crack your eggs (while others are watching), they come out like you have already beaten them.
Make them shake their head.
That’s one way to clear the kitchen too, now I just need to find some nylons!
Awesome!!!
Great way to prepare eggs while camping. Any ideas for doing pancakes similiarly? Using Masa to make flatbread/tortillos on a hot rock has been a hit too. I just love you Prepared Housewives!
Love you too :) You need to send some pics of how you do your flatbread/tortillas on a hot rock!
I’ll keep a lookout for pancakes in a bag too!
Great idea Jamie! You can even set your grill rack over the rocket stove to heat up some toast while your at it.
Pat
Why didn’t I think of that? I can’t eat eggs without some toast. I’ll have to make an addition to this post after I try it!
That should work with my Jetboil too! I’m totally going to impress people on my next camp-out.
I lol’d at your hatred for mushrooms because I also hate them. Why in the world would anyone want to eat a fungus in the first place?
That makes me so happy someone else shares in my mushroom hatred :)
When I read “not Ziploc” I was taken aback until I learned about your reasoning. For those who don’t read comments, it just looks like you a prejudiced against the company. you may want to reword your rewording to fix that too.
I MUST have a Rocket Stove! And make these eggs! Will try the glass jar method! ^^
Make sure to report back on your findings ;) I want to try out the jar method too!
I did it. Coddled an egg. Not in a Rocket stove…haven’t built that yet. But inside, in a big skillet, in those squat pimiento jars. I used about an inch of water in the skillet, which has a high-domed lid.
Greased jars well, cracked one egg per jar. Left the jar lids on, loose. Didn’t have a trivet or rack. Used chopsticks. -_-
Gave them oh, seven, nine minutes at a low simmer. It was too long. The eggs are nice, but way closer to hard-boiled with no shell. I’d try an even lower heat for five minutes. At one time I owned egg coddlers but they were given away due to, uhm, stupidity. Custard cups might work as well.
Thanks for the update! Maybe it was to long since there was only one egg in them. Did you put other stuff in it besides the egg, or did you do just the egg?
You sound like me, I keep finding good uses for things I’ve already thrown out! Not sure what I was thinking!
It was just the egg. Maybe next time I’ll try it with ‘other stuff.’
I bet a custard cup would hold more and be easier to clean, too.
Really enjoying the whole thing from stove to making eggs. But I have broken glass jars by boiling in water. What are your tips to prevent glass breaking? I did not have a rack, the jar was just in the pan of water, warming maple syrup. I almost cried when I lost that maple syrup….
Patti: Maybe a case of ‘thermal shock?’ The jar and syrup were cold, and plunged into boiling water? I don’t know if that was true in your case, but it can happen.
Hey, thanks for your response BBT! Thermal shock can definitely play into getting broken jars, especially when placing them straight into the pan without a rack. Do you think that is maybe what happened Patti? I would cry to if I lost all my maple syrup :(
Try using a washcloth on the bottom of the pan. My mother-in-law taught me that when she taught me canning.
Your directions on making the rocket stove are so clear and easy to follow, esp with the great photos. Could you do a “gasifier stove” also called a gas wood stove? I watch the you tube video’s at work, no computer at home. Really need the step by step instructions. Really enjoying your site!
Send me a link of what you had in mind and I’ll see what I can come up with. There are lots of different versions of gas wood stoves out there!
We did this the last time we went camping, but I threw some tortilla shells and salsa in the cooler and we put the finished omelettes into a tortilla with bacon and hash browns and had the best breakfast burritos ever! They were so easy and so good.
Wow, sounds amazing! Thanks for the suggestions! I got to try this out!
Great idea love to see more thankyou!! :)
Thank you Kim!
Can you freeze these and put them in fridge the night before or boil them from frozen?
I’m not sure how it would taste, but you could always try it out!
