Preparedness Holiday Gift Guide to Stuff You Actually NEED

Preparedness & Survival Holiday Gift Guide

Let me help you out!

Are you tired of lame gifts each year, or do you struggle with what to give? Anyways, I’ve got you covered.

I’ve rounded up 30 of the most popular emergency preparedness & survival items that people can’t live without and compiled them together for you. All you need to do now is email this list to your mother-in-law, or tape it to your husbands computer and you’re set – well almost!

Preparedness Resources

BOOKS & RESOURCES:

food-storage-made-easy-2Food Storage Made Easy Binder

This is the very first binder I bought when I decided to start taking food storage seriously! They’ve since made it even better and have turned it into a 3 PART FOOD STORAGE PROGRAM containing – Babysteps Checklists, Food Storage Made Easy Encyclopedia, and a Recipe Appendix. 50% OFF until 12/1

sensible-food-storage-wendy-dewittSensible Food Storage: Storing the Foods You Love to Eat

Wendy DeWitt’s video changed the way I viewed food storage entirely! She doesn’t waste time with excuses, but shows you EXACTLY how to be prepared! After watching her presentation, I was finally able to create a plan for my family and stick to it.

the-practical-prepper-kylene-jonathan-jonesA Common Sense Guide to Preparing for Emergencies

This book is just what it says it is! It outlines each step of emergency preparedness covering everything from cooking in a crisis, to home security and protection, to emergency water disinfection. Read my full review here.

at-home-canning-kendraAt Home Canning for Beginners

*Use Code for $5 off: LEARN2CAN*
I was scared for my life when I canned for the first time – but it doesn’t need to be that way. Kendra walks you step-by-step through the canning process so you’ll be confident and ready for whenever you take on that big scary canner ;)

food-storage-for-self-sufficiency-and-survivalFood Storage for Self-Sufficiency

This book covers pretty much everything you need to know about food storage! It goes into detail about food storage options, planning methods, using your food storage (before it goes to waste), water storage, canning & preserving, and so much more! Read my full Review here.

Water Filters and Storage

WATER FILTERS & STORAGE:

lifestraw-personal-water-filterLifeStraw Personal Water Filter

I recently bought one of these for each of our Emergency Bags. You can only carry so much water when you’re on the go and these make it possible to drink water from other sources. It removes 99.9% of waterborne bacteria & parasites, and filters up to 1000 liters.

*If you have more $$$ to spend, check out the Katadyn Pocket Filter – it can filter up to 13,000 gallons!

jerrycan-water-filterJerryCan by LIFESAVER Systems

This is actually on my wish list. All my friends (at least the prepared ones), have been purchasing these. It can hold up to 5 gallons so you can take the water with you, and the best part is it can filter up to 20,000 liters (which is enough water to sustain a family of 4 for nearly a year)!

big-berkeyBig Berkey Water Filter

The Berkey system is ideal for everyday use, especially where electricity, water pressure or treated water may not be available. The Big Berky can purify 3.5 gallons per hour and hold up to 2.25 gallons. You can also exchange the filters so it will last a lifetime.

water-brickWaterBricks – Stackable Water Container

These are a great option for small spaces! It holds 3.5 gallons which is small enough to carry, place in the refrigerator, or even put under the bed.  You can also stack and interlock them up to 4 feet high, making them versatile too!

260-sure-water-tank260 Gallon SureWater Tank

If you have room & money for something like this – get it! It’s the cheapest one I could find that held a LOT of water, was simple to use, opaque, and took up the same amount of space that my 55 gallon tank did (but holds 5 times more water)!

I went ahead and purchased a Drinksafe Hose to reduce the bacteria when filling the tank. Also, if you use a Water Treatment Kit it eliminates the need to rotate the water for 5+ years – definitely beats changing it out every 6 months!

*There is also the 525 Gallon SureWater Tank for the extra thirsty & prepared ;)

Preserving Food Storage

PRESERVING FOOD STORAGE:

foodsaver-vacuum-sealerVacuum Sealing System

This is great for long-term storage of meats and fish in the freezer, but my favorite way to use it is to vacuum-seal items with higher sugar and fat content (chocolate chips, nuts, chips, etc.). You’ll need to make sure you have either the Wide-Mouth Jar Sealer or Regular-Mouth Jar Sealer to fit your jars.

using food stored in bucketsBuckets & Mylar Bags

One of the cheapest ways to preserve your dry goods long-term is to put them into buckets! What you need is a bucket, mylar bag to fit inside, oxygen absorber, and if you’re really fancy a hand-held sealer (love mine & so does everyone else)!

water-bath-cannerWater Bath Canner

A Water Bath Canner is a great way to preserve all your fresh fruits and vegetables at home.  My family gets really excited when I use it to make jam or can peaches. Here are some essential canning tools you’ll need & these JarBoxes help keep your jars from breaking.

all-american-pressure-cannerAll American 921 Pressure Canner

If you ever plan on preserving chicken, beef, or other meats (which I highly recommend) you’ll need a pressure canner! This one even fits on my Camp Chef Stove if I want to cook outside, or if if I’m ever without electricity!

bosch-meat-grinderBosch Mixer with Attachments

Whatever you do, don’t get a KitchenAid (unless all you care about is looks :) You want the stronger motor that the Bosch offers so it can handle more than one batch of cookies. The Bosch will not only mix a quadruple batch of bread dough at one time, but it can also convert into a meat grinder, a sausage stuffer, and so much more!

Ideas for Surviving Without Electricity

WHEN THE POWER IS OUT:

manual-hand-washing-machineLaundry – Manual Hand Washing Machine

I got one of these for my birthday – Yes! You heard that right! I’m a dork ;) It’s something I’ve been wanting in case the power goes out. It can also come in handy if you actually attempt to do laundry on your camping, fishing, or hunting expeditions.

emergency-toilet-seatToilet Seat Cover on 5 Gallon Bucket

Now this I really never want to use, but it would definitely come in handy if you ever needed a back-up toilet. You can use the bucket the toilet seat goes on to store some extra hygiene supplies too – toilet paper, trash bags, poo-wipes, hand sanitizer, menstrual cup, etc.

hand-grain-mill-wheat-grinderHand Operated Grain Meal (Wheat Grinder)

If you have wheat stored, then you better have one of these stored too. Ok, you don’t have to, but it will be a life-saver if the power ever goes out. You’ll still be able grind your wheat and eat something besides wheat berries ;)

bosch-mixer-hand-crankHand Crank for Bosch Mixers

I can’t knead dough to save my life, so for me this was a MUST! The hand crank allows me to easily finish kneading my dough even if there is a power failure. A lot of appliances offer powerless options, so look into the ones that you use on a regular basis and consider getting a back-up.

duro-max-gas-generatorGenerator & Pri-G Fuel Extender

And when all else fails, plug it in to a generator ;) Generators can be wonderful, but they’re also usually expensive, noisy, and not a long-term solution – so plan accordingly. If you do have one make sure to have extra fuel that is treated with a fuel stabilizer so it can last indefinitely and help keep your generator running smoothly.

Alternative Cooking Methods

ALTERNATIVE COOKING:

IMG_9778The Rocket Stove

My favorite powerless cooking method by far! The rocket stove can cook an entire meal using only a handful of twigs! You can make it for practically free using only a few cans, or buy one of the cool designs that are already made.

wonder-ovenWonder Oven

This is like a crock-pot, but without the cord. It can keep Hot things Hot, or Cold things Cold. To cook with it you bring your food to a boil then snuggle the pot into the center. Your food will continue cooking until it’s done! There are patterns to make one, or you can cheat like me and just buy one!

global-sun-ovenSun Oven

All you need to be able to cook in the Sun Oven is – yep – the SUN! It doesn’t matter what the weather is outside as long as the sun is shining. On cloudy days you’ll have to find another alternative, but otherwise this should do it’s job!

4-2-HERC-Oven-300x213HERC – Powered  by Tealight Candles

This is one of the few alternative cooking methods you can use indoors. All you need is 10-20 tealight candles depending on the size oven you have. The design is absolutely ingenious – you’ll be amazed at everything you can cook with it!

volcano-collapsible-stoveVolcano Collapsible Cook Stove

The Volcano wins the most versatile award! You can grill, stack-up to 5 Dutch ovens, bake bread, cook with your Wok, or even roast marshmallows with it! Not only that, but it can cook with either propane, charcoal, or wood. Pretty amazing – I don’t think there is anything it can’t do!

Hey, what a great giveaway!!! My favs are Food Storage for Self-Sufficiency, ALL the items in the water category (but if I HAD to pick one I’d want the Jerrycan by Lifesaver, looks great for portability), Buckets and Mylar bags (haven’t quite gotten that far in the process yet), the manual hand washing machine (I could teach my kids to do that), the HERC for alternative cooking category, and I would choose Emergency Essentials for the store because I’ve been spending a lot of time on their website lately!

Thanks for the great site and for putting so many great ideas out there!

What a wonderful list and such a fantastic giveaway! Anyhow, hard to pick favorites, but I’ll go with 1) Food Storage for Self Sufficiency, 2) Big Berkey Water Filter [We use ours for all our drinking and cooking water since the well water is less than pristine.] 3) All American 921 Pressure Canner, 4) Manual Hand Washing Machine, 5) The Rocket Stove, and 6) Emergency Essentials. Sorry, I don’t have an account on pinterest, but I’ll be sure to send this along.

Books + Canning fer beginners, I’ve never done that.
Water = Big Berkey, with a lake just outside the door I could use a bigger filter. PS. still huntin for the eggs.
Food storage = Pressure canner, kinda goes with the book.
Simply surviving = grinder, never know when something may need grindin.
Off Grid Cookin = Herc oven, for things ground.
Stores = Amazon of course, I really like the one stop shop.
Life = A hot (or not all that hot) prepper lady to read the book, pour in the water. can the goodies (she will be happy that I got the book), grind the grains to make bread and other goodies, put the bread in the oven (hay, I’m a guy, I might burn myself), and punch the puter keys that orders the stuff I want from Amazon, with that new gift card.
    Hope I didn’t ferget anythin.

What a great giveaway! I look forward to your emails. Here are my responses:

    • Books & Resources – I love all cookbooks. I have such a collection! I have followed your guide and made my own food storage one too. I am pretty proud of that one.
    • Water Filters & Storage – The JerryCan is also on my list of things to get. It has great portability and would be terrific if you have to grab and go!
    • Preserving Food Storage – I love my pressure canner but have an All American in my Amazon cart for when I can afford to splurge.
    • When the Power is Out Items – We love our generator and we have 2 just in case but when the power is out we like to play the old fashion games with each other.
    • Alternative Cooking Methods – I want to try to make a wonder oven when my quilting skills get a little better but for now we have a camp stove and grill that we use.
    • Food Storage & Survival Stores – I love Thrive!! The quality is wonderful!

Good luck to everyone and may you have a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving!!

While I feel like my preparedness level is better than average, there are still many this that I don’t have. That list of books was great. I would like to read A Common Sense Guide to Preparing for Emergencies. I d
Already have water containers for storage, but if I needed to transport them, I think the water bricks would be awesome.
A lot of m friends have the Bosch mixers. I would love to get one… And all of the attachments!
I don’t have a manual hand washing machine. I guess I never thought too much about dirty laundry.
I have seen rocket stoves but don’t own one. I would love that!
I have used all the food storage shopping options. My favorite is amazon because they have so many options!

There is something in each category that is on my Wish List!

At Home Canning for Beginners: I’ve been wanting to get this for a year now. I’ve heard great things about Kendra’s course, and I have corresponded with her before!

The Big Berkey Water Filter: After the several water scares in my area, I could sleep a lot more soundly knowing we had one.

The Bosch Mixer with attachments is one of those dream items I’ll likely never get around to owning. Interesting to know they also make a hand crank!

I know I will eventually get that Manual Hand Washing Machine.

The Sun Oven is another one that I may eventually be able to get, can’t wait to try one out!

I’ve always wanted to try Thrive Life, I’ve heard good things…but it’s not in our budget right now.

Thanks for this giveaway…Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

My faves for my Christmas list include: The practical prepper (though DeWitt is pretty brilliant, too!), The JerryCan, a vacuum sealer, a handheld wheat grinder (plus maybe an electric one too because I want to start making my own organic bread), rocket stove or sun oven, and a membership to Thrive (need more fresh fruits and veggies in my food storage!).

Thanks for compiling this list! It’s a good one and Chris keeps asking me about what I want for Christmas… I may or may not be one of those people who are really hard to shop for. ;)

Great prizes! My favorite, hmmm, well, o.k.
#1Food Storage Made Easy Binder to help keep me organized.
#2Big Berkey Water Filter for obvious reason.
#3Vacuum Sealing System to make the food last longer.
#4Hand Washing Macine because we will still need clean clothes.
#5Herc-Powered by Tealight Candles so that I can cook indoors.
#6Thrive Life so that preparing all of the food myself would make me tired, and there would be missing, a lot of the variety.

I would love to have Food Storage Made Easy, it’s on my list. I don’t have a good water filter, yet. I do have all canning supplies, including an All- American pressure canner. I have a washboard and am planning to get the manual clothes washer. I have been checking into the wonder oven, not sure about it, though. I have ordered from Thrive and LDS, both good products.

I want everything but I know I don’t have the resources to buy it all. Anyway, I will choose one per resource and tell you why I chose that one.

    1. The Food Storage Made Easy Binder: I want this because I am collecting recipes for using my food storage. What good is it if you don’t know what to do it with.

    2. Big Berkey Water Filter: I started to buy this one this year but put it off. This year I will definitely buy one. In fact, I will use the money from you for the Amazon gift card to buy it. I have heard so many positive reviews on it.

    3. Vacuum Sealing System: I just bought one last week. It is absolutely great. I have already sealed some brown sugar and tapioca pearls in mason jars. It does a good job. I didn’t know you sell these.

    4. Laundry-Manual Hand Washing Machine: I want this to use right now. I would like to get the grease off of shirts before I put them in my washing machine. Of course, I would have it when the electricity goes off too.

    5. Sun Oven: I’m going to buy this one in 2015. I have food storage and now I need to learn how to cook outdoors. I can’t wait until I need it because I won’t know how to cook with it. This is an absolute must.

    6. Emergency Essentials: I have already bought from this store. I love it. Very Fast Service and Shipping. Very easy to work with. I like their Shipping prices.

I really meant it. I will definitely buy the Berkey Water Filtration System with the Amazon Card if I win it. I know
it is expensive. Putting this money with my own I could buy it.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

I have been subscribed to your blog since at least Sept ’14. I was a the last Self Reliant Expo but missed seeing you. :(
1.My favorite book is the Food Storage Made Easy which I have had for a year now. (I want to get Food Storage for Self-Sufficiency.)
    2. Favorite “Water” is the Berkey Water Filter. We even took it with us on our 5 day campout for Thanksgiving week. (I want more Water Bricks.)
    3. Under the Food Storage Category my favorite is my vacuum sealer. It stays on my kitchen counter and I love how quickly I can process my Zaycon orders. (I want the All American 921 Pressure Canner.)
    4. For Surviving I have to say my hand crank mill gives me peace of mind that all the wheat we have stored won’t be wasted if we don’t have electricity. (I want the Manual Hand Washing Machine.)
    5. The volcano stove is another favorite in the off-grid cooking category. We used it every day on the campout last week. It roasted a small turkey for Thanksgiving beautifully. (I want a HERC)
    6. Stores, oh my I love them all. I use Amazon the most so I guess it must be my favorite. (Zaycon comes in second)

Thanks for your very informative website. Found you on Pinterest this year. I started using the 5 gallon buckets, Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. Set up at least 6 months of food storage for my family. Used Kendra’s book At Home Canning for Beginners to can. Taught myself!! Graduated to canning chicken and beef based on info on your site. Need to get water storage kick started with a Lifestraw and water bricks. Sent away for the Emergency Essentials catalog to additional supplies. Generator with Pri-g stabilizer would be a great addition to our supplies along with a rocket stove and manual hand washing plunger.

Wow, how fun to actually (maybe) be able to get some of the things on the ‘need to get’ list!
I’ve been trying for several months to find reviews of things and best prices on things like a grain grinder- NOT fun. Nice to see a list already made up!

IF I could get something from each category you have listed, I would choose:
Books & Resources – “At Home Canning for Beginners” book
Water Filters & Storage – Big Berkey Water Filter
Preserving Food Storage – LOL, it’s a toss up between: a Vacuum Sealing System and the All American 921 Pressure Canner
When the Power is Out Items – The Hand Operated Grain Meal (Wheat Grinder) IF it also can grind corn…
Alternative Cooking Methods -Volcano Collapsible Cook Stove (though a close second would be the Sun Oven)
Food Storage & Survival Stores – Amazon – where I would find some manually operated hand tools and canning jars

Thanks for the opportunity to try for the win!

Hmm… The books are the hardest…

    1) Food Storage for Self-Sufficiency
    2) Lifestraw (Tied with Waterbricks, but Lifestraw is more versatile…)
    3) Waterbath Canner
    4) Toilet Seat Cover (Just because I think it’s hilarious, but I’d probably actually buy a grain mill, if I could afford it…)
    5) Rocket Stove
    6) Amazon (Because they’re the only one that ships to my area)

1, Food Storage Made Easy Binder – Love Jodi & Julie – they’re full of helpful tips!
    2. JerryCan – love the portability!
    3. Bosch mixer – I have a Kitchen Aid (before I knew about Bosch) which I would pass down to my daughter when she’s old enough to move out.
    4. Volcano Stove – for its versatility (or the large HERC oven
    5. The hand crank for the Bosch mixer if I could get #3 or the hand washer
    6. Hmm tough choice since I use all but the LDS centers. I’ll go with Amazon, since there is always something on my wish list! :-)

JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS GIVEAWAY! Before I relised that you had a giveaway I was researching the LAUNDRY WASHER because it looked interestingly like a plunger and I had to know how this thig worked. Good design, I really like it. I also like the ROCKET STOVE and wood love to have this in my emergency storage or use it now to save electricity. I told my husband that I wanted a FOOD SEALER for Christmas (so i guess i’ll have to share the gift card if i win) and I need MYLAR BAGS (lost of them) I already have stacks of buckets awaiting me to order mylar bags. Also I really really love the BRICK WATER STORAGE, what a great idea (beats jugs in milk crates, i’ll just have to use those for bathing). I can really use the THRIVE CAN ORGANIZER, my cans keep falling over because the design was changed at the bottom of most cans today (this really irritates me) so I need SEVERAL THRIVE CAN ORGANIZERS really bad. I’ve already SHARED THIS POSTING BY EMAIL with a good friend and suvivalist like me.
If i had to send you a photo of my unorganized storage you would Definitely want me to have your FOOD STORAGE MADE EASY. I get overwhelmed at times when organizing my storage room, yes you heard right I have a whole bedroom dedicated to my storage and it’s just not the way I want it to be, so I need your book.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS CHANCE TO WIN………………………………………….
